CPAP
CPAP stands for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure, which is a medical device used to treat obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and other respiratory conditions that result in disturbed breathing during sleep.
The CPAP machine delivers a continuous and steady flow of air pressure through a mask that is worn over the patient’s nose and/or mouth. This positive pressure helps to keep the airways open, preventing them from collapsing during sleep and allowing the patient to breathe more easily.
CPAP machines are typically prescribed by doctors after a sleep study confirms a diagnosis of OSA or other sleep disorders. They are available in various types and models, including fixed pressure, automatic pressure, and bilevel positive airway pressure (BiPAP) machines, which provide different levels of pressure support based on the patient’s needs.
